How Qatar’s Vegetable Supply Chain works?
Just as the pandemic has forced many of us to reassess our buying habits, have you ever wondered how much effort it takes to get the vegetables to the shelves?
Vegetables have limited shelf lives. Luckily, hydroponic and aquaponic farming has enabled the industry to overcome seasonality and gaining popularity nowadays. Qatar farmers are producing vegetables using fewer water resources.
Packaging plays an essential role in the vegetable supply chain as these are perishable items as compared to other items in the Food industry and needs proper handling to keep this fresh and increase their shelf life.
The expansion in the adoption of cutting-edge farming technologies and increased appetite for organic vegetables are factors driving the demand for a highly efficient supply chain in Qatar.
The vegetable market is fragmented into fruits and vegetables in Qatar.
According to the Director of the Food Security Department at MME, “the pandemic outbreak might impact the food supply chain of any country. But Qatar has recently managed the shortage of food supply due to quick strategies and support by Hassad Food company and Qatar Airways”.
The supply chain was well tested earlier, and all the necessary preparations were done in advance to face such challenges.
One of the strategies was every food item should have multiple sources of import. In any case of obstruction, they can switch to the other alternative to continue supply within 24 hours.
Qatar was also able to meet the demand for vegetables during the COVID-19 outbreak due to the large storage capacity for the long term.
One of Qatar’s significant pillars is the local production of vegetables and serves up to 28% of the total population. It is also planned to reach 70% of fresh produce and achieve self-sufficiency.
The rise in demand for local produce is increasing among Qatar consumers due to its best quality compared to imported products.
Qatar Govt. is also putting up tremendous efforts in new agricultural and irrigation technologies to overcome the blockades by its neighboring countries.
Large storage capacity is required to store perishable products such as fresh vegetables, which can be stored for a more extended period and reach the consumers in prime condition.
Supply chain and storage play a vital role in the vegetable market. An efficient and proper infrastructure will help Qatar farmers to produce more vegetables and deliver them on time in fresh condition.
It is crucial to maintain the quality of these perishable fresh produce vegetables on the supply chain so that there is less rejection by the consumers. Poor storage infrastructure may lead to deterioration of the quality and may lead to losses to the farmers.
Transportation plays an equal role in the vegetable supply chain because it required controlled temperature during the movement of goods etc.
